Most founders think fundraising is a search problem.
"If I just find the right investor, they'll say yes."
That's wrong.
Fundraising is a readiness problem.
You can get meetings. You can get interest. You can get "we'll follow up."
But if your business is not ready, nothing moves forward.
What "Ready" Actually Means (Not What You Think)
Investors don't fund potential. They fund clarity.
Here's what they look for:
Not "we'll figure out monetization later." A real model. Unit economics. CAC, LTV, margins. You can defend every number.
Not just "we have 10 beta users." Real traction. Paying customers. Repeat usage. Something that looks like a business.
Not just a founder with a dream. A team that has shipped, sold, and survived. Or at least a founder who can show they're learning fast.
Not "we'll hire and market." Specific: "We will hire 2 engineers, spend X on customer acquisition, and reach Y revenue in 12 months."
If you don't have these, you're not ready. No investor will save you.
The Three Mistakes That Kill Your Raise
You have an idea and a deck. You think that's enough. It's not. You waste your first meetings with top investors, and they remember. Second chances are rare.
"Great pitch, let's stay in touch" is not a commitment. It's a polite no. Move on.
You have projections, but you can't explain the assumptions. Your CAC is higher than LTV. You don't know your burn multiple. Investors smell this from across the table.
The Readiness Checklist (Borrow This)
Before you talk to a single investor, ask yourself:
- Can I explain my business model in 30 seconds?
- Do I have 12 months of financial projections with clear assumptions?
- Have I validated my unit economics (even with small data)? Do I know exactly how I'll use the money?
- Have I already talked to 20 customers (not friends) who said they'd pay?
If you answered "no" to any of these, you are not ready.
